include members of the burn care team, doctors, nurses, fire- fighters, therapists, social workers, and adult burn survivors. counselors in the cabins are often college students who have come to camp
and fell in love with the program. camp director ter- rie sullivan says
, ?most counselors are repeats year after year because they come and don?t want to leave. we?re like a big family.? ?e camper to staff ratio is 4 to 1, which allows the kids to form close relation- ships with staff members. ?e children are also able to find mentors in their camp counselors. ?to see the counselors working with these kids is so wonder- ful,? sullivan says. but the staff members aren?t the only people who help keep things running so smoothly. ?e camp receives support from the percy r. johnson burn founda- tion, the general health system, recov- ering burns of louisiana, and firefight- ers throughout the states of louisiana and texas. with events such as the burn run biker benefit?continuing the ride in jeffer- son, texas, the camp can remain open and continue to provide great programs to the campers. ??e generosity and love for humanity of those who give so much to the camp is inspiring,? says sullivan. ?e camp has allowed the children to flourish in an environment that makes them feel safe and accepted. ??ey?re running up to you and playing and being themselves without worrying about being the only one with scars,? says sul- livan. ??ey feel comfortable and know they?re loved.? camp i?m still me is hoping to welcome more campers in the future by increas- ing its outreach and visibility. and you can bet sharon and june will be along for the ride. ? june 2016 | brparents.com 47
