mon, ages 12 and 11, suffered severe burns six years ago. while being treated at baton rouge general hospital, their doc- tor informed their mom, young mi mon, about a camp
where they could spend time with other burn victims their age and still have the oppor - tunity to experience sum- mer fun just like the rest of the children. this year will be sharon and june?s third year at camp i?m still me, and they can?t wait! camp i?m still me is held every june in scottsville, texas, and is free of charge for campers
ages 5 to 17. ?is year, the camp will be celebrating its 25th year of encouraging campers to see the beau- ty within themselves even though they may look different on the outside. campers come from all over louisiana, texas, arkansas, mississippi and okla- homa to attend the camp and have fun with their friends. and, just like any other traditional camp, camp i?m still me includes activities such as fishing, swimming, arts and crafts, canoeing, volleyball, and a talent show. ??ey are having fun with other kids, but they don?t feel any different,? young mi explains. ?all of the children attend- ing are going through the same experi- ences, so they feel very comfortable.? for june and sharon, the field trips the campers take is the best part of camp because it allows them to try new and exciting things. ?we have gone to water parks and bowling alleys in the past and look forward to the trips this summer,? says sharon. june also loves the positive attitude of everyone there, especially the camp counselors. ??ey guide you on field trips and support you during games, and they are always there for you. ?ey really help you out a lot, and it feels great,? he says. camp i?m still me connect / l o c a l p r o f i l e by madeline rathle they?re running up to you and playing and being themselves without worrying about being the only one with scars. e n c o u r ag i n g c o n f i d e n c e i n c h i l d r e n 46 brparents.com | june 2016
