easter
in the 1980s by susan cedotal a s we dive into this spring season, i cannot help but remember my
easter
celebrations in the 1980s. and while i?ve passed many of our family?s traditions down to my children, you have to laugh at some of these totally rad memories from the past! the
easter
outfit: this was as important of a decision as any decision about
easter
. from shoulder pads, to hats, to shoes, the
easter
outfit had to be on-point. in fact, there were certain rules and stipulations and addendums to the rules if necessary. in other words, my mother had the final say. rule #1. you must wear a dress. even my tomboy sister had a fancy
easter
dress. rule #2: only white shoes were to be worn on
easter
sunday
. white shoes made their debut on
easter
morning. it didn?t matter if it was 100 degrees the week before
easter
, we were still wearing black patent shoes from the fall. everyone knows the cardinal southern rule: no white before
easter
. rule #3: you could wear a hat on
easter
sunday
. this was a totally exciting thing for me. i loved an
easter
bonnet! my sister never opted for a hat. how in the world would she show off her sky-high bangs in an
easter
hat? r.i.p. 80s bangs. the
easter
egg battle? i mean hunt: it was competitive! we actually practiced in our front yard getting the eggs quickly before the big day. was it better to scoop or individually pick up each egg? the variations were limitless. on
easter
morning, there were winners and losers and more eggs hidden on plaid couches than you can imagine. it was anyone?s game and our mother let us wrestle it out for bragging rights for a whole year. there definitely were no participation trophies at our house. we just had a chocolate-crazed war to be the
easter
egg champion of 1986! we even took pictures holding up our number one fingers and the loser had to take a loser picture. competition in my house was always brutal and that was certainly no exception on
easter
.
easter
baskets: our
easter
baskets were the same every year. we didn?t get a care bears basket or a star wars basket. we got a brown basket that was used for 18 years. our
easter
baskets were filled with candy, candy, and more candy. there was no worry of organic gummies or gluten-free anything. we were sent into a diabetic coma willingly by our parents. but don?t worry, we washed it down with some coke for good measure. we only got small toys for
easter
. i?m not sure when the
easter
bunny started visiting santa?s toy shop, but it definitely wasn?t in the 80s.
church
:
easter
always included
church
. a?er our sugar rush, we were gussied up in our
easter
finest. we always went to the early 8:30 a.m. service in order to make sure to have our original pew spots. we didn?t want the ?chreastures? to get our spot a?er all. this was our word that we used to describe those people that only came to
church
on christmas and
easter
. i think we also went to early service to beat out the baptists to lunch. if we went to early
church
and then
sunday
school, we could get to a restaurant by 11:30 a.m. before the noon rush. once again, that competitiveness was apparent in my family. admittedly, we had some years where we were the chreastures. a?er my grandfather?s death, it was hard to go to
church
on
sunday
. my mother just felt sad. but
easter
sunday
brought us back and that is what it?s truly about today. this
easter
, i?m going to carry on much of these same traditions. my children will be dressed better than usual, and i?ll have the final say so in the
easter
outfit department. we will have an
easter
egg hunt, but i?ll probably not make as big of deal about who won or lost. i may secretly take the winner in the other room and have them hold up a number one finger just for old times sake, but everyone will feel good about their
easter
egg finds. my kids will use a traditional basket, but i?ll ask the
easter
bunny to not put too much candy in there. we will definitely go to
church
, but we will not make it to early service. i have no idea how my mom got us all out the door by 8 a.m. on a weekend. finally, we will celebrate the resurrection of christ and the resurgence of family traditions. because whether you?re in shoulder pads or not this
easter
sunday
, there?s some pretty radical stuff to celebrate! ? 9 6 b r p a r e n t s . c o m | a p r i l 2 0 1 8
