d o you remember the hat that the
camp
counselors always wore in the movies? you know, the one that sort of looks like the stereotypical forest ranger hat... sort of like a combination of a safari hat, a fishing hat, and a cowboy hat? when i think of
camp
, memories of years past come flooding into my mind...images of hayley mills acting as twins or lindsay lohan, depending on your generation, appear, pulling pranks on one another in cabins. wait a minute! that?s not what
camp
?s all about! those are just movies, and whatever feel good sentiment those scenes might give you, it?s still only fiction. in truth, the real
camp
experience is something altogether different, and much more in-depth and complex. there are
camp
s
that kids and teens can spend the day at, there are
camp
s that they can spend the whole
summer
at, and there are opportunities for teens to be involved in working with the
camp
s as well. the most common conceptions of
camp
stem from movies, since there are several families who?ve simply never sent their kids off to
camp
. movies and television are responsible for all that they know about
camp
.
camp
is some magical place out in the deep forest, several hours away, with tents or teepees or cabins, big roaring fires with smores, swimming and canoeing in crystal lake, and horseback riding. to tell the truth, there are several
camp
s just like that, and there are also
camp
s that are completely different.
summer
activities for kids can involve volunteer community service, educational activities, employment opportunities, and even the chance to share their knowledge with others. some
camp
s are church-sponsored, some are run by local organizations and companies, and some have developed simply for the purpose of being a
summer
camp
. so while you?re out there chasing leprechauns and picking up four leaf clovers, take a moment to find out about some of the interesting and enriching
summer
activities that your kids could be involved in. and more importantly, ask them what they?d be interested in doing over the
summer
. you might just be surprised to learn that their interests aren?t that different from yours. in every issue a mot h e r ?s vo i c e a my foreman- plaisance publisher/editor in chief amy @brparents .oom forward march! it?s off to
