this is undeniable? some of the most important professionals on earth are
teachers
who genuinely care about their students? successes. the difference a teacher can make in a
child
?s life can sometimes change his future. a student may feel forsaken by his relatives and friends, but truly good
teachers
are able to revive the
child
?s sagging spirits by offering a kind word or showing interest. their desire to reach a
child
is shown in their intense level of
com
mitment. can you imagine a profession so profound that it gives you an opportunity to see eyes light up at a kind word just when they are ready to give up? i often wonder if my own
child
ren?s
teachers
realize how much of an impact they had on their students? lives. i speak with many educators in my work, and i watch their reactions when i mention i am working on an education issue for the magazine. instead of the nod or acknowledgement i might have expected, i receive intense emotional discourses on their profession. ?let me tell you about my experience last week,? one veteran said to me. as she recounted a series of events involving her school?s administration, her frustration nearly backed me across the room. our
child
ren aren?t the only ones needing a kind word or an expression of appreciation for the work they do. many
teachers
with whom i have spoken voice discontent on management issues, particularly their paychecks, accountability, and lack of respect. explaining her decision not to return to teach, my sister said, ?i just can?t stick it out for another five years,? when she would have be
com
e eligible for retirement. i also have met other
teachers
full of excitement, too young and new to their profession to be as jaded and disillusioned as some of the veterans. i wonder if there will
com
e a time when there won?t be enough good
teachers
left in our schools to teach all our
child
ren. so this school year, i encourage you to take the time to form a relationship with your
child
?s teacher. make an effort to show gratitude, and let it be known that you appreciate everything they are doing for their classrooms. you never know when an educator may need that extra push to continue being a role model and mentor for her students. stay connected enter to win free goodies, and be the first to know what's going on around town at brparents.
