pathways to parenting getting a
child
?s
vision
tested when is the last time you had your
child
?s
vision
tested? if you?re having trouble remembering, chances are it?s time to schedule an appointment! the american optometric association recommends every
child
should have a
vision
test by age three to ensure his or her
vision
is developing properly and the
eye
s are healthy. if there are no issues found, the
child
should be seen again at age five. from ages 6-18,
child
ren should have an
eye
exam every two years. however, there are some cases when a
child
should be seen by the doctor before the two years has passed. dr. susan jong of advanced
eye
center shares, ?
child
ren should have their
vision
tested if they?re experiencing headaches,
eye
pain,
eye
tiredness after reading or working on the computer, blurred or double
vision
, tilting of the head to one side, unusual clumsiness or poor coordination, unusual blinking or
eye
rubbing, letters or words move or ?run together,? or they are losing their place when reading or copying.? during the
vision
testing, the doctor will check the
child
?s
eye
health, the visual acuity at distance and near, the refractive conditions (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism), and color
vision
. a significant amount of what a
child
learns in the classroom comes through the visual system. dr. jong adds, ?this makes it critical for school-age
child
ren to have comprehensive
eye
exams to check both health and functionality. screenings are not enough.? if your
child
is experiencing any of the symptoms, or is simply complaining about their
eye
s, be sure to contact your
child
?s doctor. we want to keep those bright
eye
s healthy. february 2017 | brparents.com 17
