? i have achieved many different kinds of success in my life
. being the publisher of this magazine has been rewarding and a true, solid commitment of mine. however, the greatest enjoyments in my life are my parents, husband, children, and grandchildren; everything else loses its importance by comparison. there are certain things about family life that i have a fearless conviction about and that research confirms: a good quality education is good for the mind, but developing your child?s soul is the greatest gift you can give them. it is the principle foundation of all knowledge. as parents, we recognize the importance of developing intellectual and physical muscles, but we should also guide them in spiritual and religious development. i went to school
most of my early life in texas where i learned religion as part of human history. religion has shaped such a large portion of history, and it is important to learn and respect all religions though they may be different from our own. i was raised in the presbyterian church and in a christian home, which taught me to think critically. i know that god has delegated me the authority to teach and raise my children. god will hold us responsible for the education our children receive whether from teachers, books, projects, or schools. some parents may think it doesn?t matter whether they take their children to church on sunday, especially when their children go to a private christian school. while serving on a local private school board, i heard parents say many times that their children were already getting religious training all week in school. from the very beginning of humanity, it has been the responsibility of the family unit to teach children the truth about god?not the school system. religion is something that needs to be taught and seen at home or in a church as well as in a school. some of the most valuable lessons are not taught from books and can only be learned by observation and by living and doing. my children saw me on my knees in prayer, and i am glad that they did. it will serve them well in the future to know the power of prayer. they will need this as they juggle the social survival skills that people use when working and living with others. however, we must make the choice to teach them. stay connected enter to win free goodies and be the first to know what's going on around town at brparents.com the weekender receive the latest news and trends right in your inbox. subscribe at brparents.com facebook facebook.com/ batonrougeparents talk to me amy@brparents.com brpm app download our free app at google play or in the apple app store amy foreman-plaisance publisher/editor in chief in every issue / a m o t h e r ? s v o i c e 12 brparents.com | january 2017
