gifted
versus
talented
?e state of louisiana distinguishes between the terms ?
gifted
? and ?
talented
.? a
gifted
diagnosis refers to academics; a
talented
diagnosis refers to either music, art or theatre. ?e term ?diagnosis? is a big deal. a diagnosis must be made by credentialed professionals from a set of specified criteria. in the public school system, either diagnosis must be addressed in a federally mandated individualized education program (iep) under the individuals with disabilities education act, or idea. in other words, addressing the needs of a child with either a
gifted
or
talented
(or both) diagnosis falls under the same special education laws that address the needs of
children
with disabilities. placement in public schools in louisiana public schools,
gifted
and/or
talented
children
must be placed in appropriate schools that meet their needs. a school may be qualified as either a
gifted
,
talented
, or both
gifted
and
talented
school. then schools are classified based on two basic models: resource programs or self- contained classes. in resource classes, also known as ?pull-out? classes, students are in a traditional classroom for part of the day and removed to separate areas for specialized instruction by r.t. ripley when parents suspect their
children
are
gifted
or
talented
, the search begins for finding the right educational environment that will help their
children
reach their full potential. with the terminology varying from state to state and between public and private school systems, parents are often confused with conflicting or counseling. ?e required ?pull-out? time can vary from entire classes to as little as fifteen minutes of counseling. a few public schools have self-contained classrooms that, by law, can only have other
gifted
children
in them or students scoring in the potentially
gifted
range. identifying the
gifted
and
talented
for a
gifted
diagnosis,
children
must score in the 90th percentile of iq exams that measure ability, and achievement exams that measure what the student already knows. testing also includes a psychological testing component. school counselors or independent psychological testers administer the exam. ?e
talented
diagnosis is made by professionals in the field of music, art or theatre. it isn?t that easy to identify
children
as
gifted
. before the age of four, the unpredictability of
children
can adversely affect test scores. after the age of eight, many educators report factors such as underachieving that may mask the abilities of
children
who are
gifted
. it isn?t always the straight a students who are
gifted
, although many
gifted
students have straight a?s.
gifted
students do not, as many parents believe, usually excel in every academic area. more often than not,
gifted
students excel in a particular area but not in others.
