this is how 34-year-old
lis
vestergaard mikkelsen begins the story of how she, her husband and their two kids mo- ved out of their
copenhagen
apartment and into a lovely house on the outskirts of
svendborg
. ? after 14 years in the city, we really needed some more nature in our lives. we drove around looking at houses, applied for jobs, and dreamt of living a different life. then, in the spring of 2017, an interesting job position opened up in
svendborg
, and we decided to go for a visit to the town. ? it was a grey and rainy day in april, yet the streets were full of people and the city felt vibrant. that convinced us. this was definitely a great place for us to live. soon after,
lis
got the job at
svendborg
library, and the small family decided to move, without having any prior connection to south funen. - making the decision took a while, but once we made the leap, it felt surprisingly easy! like many other copenha- geners, we were wondering: ?does anything happen out there in the provinces?? the answer is: yes, very much indeed! we have already been to so many events with the kids, more than when we lived in
copenhagen
. it?s just so much easier to get around and discover the many things
svendborg
has to offer,
lis
vestergaard mikkelsen says. a forest in the backyard
lis
and her family also enjoy being closer to nature. - it took one and a half hours for us to get to the nearest forest when we lived in
copenhagen
. now we don?t have to pack anything or make big plans in advance. the forest is right there in our backyard, and we can get on our bikes and be by the water in a matter of minutes. when we have guests from
copenhagen
, their jaws drop when we bring them to the kindergarten to see the chickens and goats. it?s open in the weekends, so we can stop by and say hi to the animals if we feel like it. we?ve never done that in the city. today,
lis
? husband studies biology at the university of southern denmark in odense. from
svendborg
, it only takes about half an hour to get to the university. in copen- hagen, he only had 11 kilometres to work, yet, due to the traffic, getting there also took half an hour. ? our life in
copenhagen
is so different compared to our current life. it?s just a different set-up. we can afford a house and a car, even though one of us is still a student. that is pretty far out, if you ask me. our only regret is that we didn?t move here a long time ago!
