the small
island
ferries depart svendborg
several times a day. if you manage to get out of bed early, you can make it to both skarø and drejø in one day. but why rush? simply enjoy the stunning ferry trip through the strait, have a chat with the islanders and take your time experiencing the unique atmosphere on the small islands. skarø the crossing from svendborg to this small island takes half an hour. skarø is known for its scenic nature, its birds and animals, as well as for its very active population of about 30 people. the islanders are an industrious bunch who really know how to bring ideas to life. for instance, the small island hosts a music festival each year in august, there is an ice-cream company exporting their delicious goods all over the world, a summer café with its own smokehouse, an apothecary garden, and loads more to see. skarø-beboerforening.dk drejø drejø is a bit further away from svendborg, an hour and a quarter aboard the ferry. drejø is a perfect place to bring your bikes. the island is only four kilometres across ? from the ferry berth on the east coast
of the island to the cliff out west, from where you have a spectacular view of the archipelago. the bike ride is an experience in itself because of drejet ? a narrow isthmus with water on both sides, which you cross on your way to the west coast ? as well as the wet meadows and the fascinating birdlife. drejø?s charming old harbour on the north coast is a great place for a break, while bækskildestrand on the south coast is the place to go for a swim. drejø has a grocery store, a local museum, a café and several inte- resting farm shops selling their own products. drejo.dk for ferry timetables and prices, see page 42 of this magazine svendborg 2018 ? capital of the archipelago 07 a whole day island hopping in the south funen archipelago our best tips __svbg_event_turistbroch_gb_2018.indd 7 19/12/2017 08.33
